The Simien Mountains endowed with stunning viewpoints, extraordinary hiking trails, and endemic wildlife make it one of the most exciting mountain ranges in the world. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers breathtaking vistas, dramatic escarpments, and the opportunity to encounter Africa’s most remarkable endemic species. Trek through misty peaks, visit traditional Amhara villages, and experience the majestic landscape that has captivated explorers for centuries.
The Roof of Africa
The Simien Mountains National Park sits in the northern Ethiopian highlands, covering an area of 412 square kilometers. Formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago, the landscape has been sculpted by erosion into dramatic pinnacles, deep valleys, and sheer escarpments that drop over 1,500 meters. Ras Dashen — Ethiopia’s highest peak at 4,550 meters — sits at the heart of the park. The park is home to three of Ethiopia’s most iconic endemic animals: the Walia Ibex, the Gelada Baboon, and the Ethiopian Wolf. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978.
