The Roof of Africa
The Simien Mountains National Park sits in the northern Ethiopian highlands, covering an area of 412 square kilometers. Formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago, the landscape has been sculpted by erosion into dramatic pinnacles, deep valleys, and sheer escarpments that drop over 1,500 meters. Ras Dashen — Ethiopia’s highest peak at 4,550 meters — sits at the heart of the park. The park is home to three of Ethiopia’s most iconic endemic animals: the Walia Ibex, the Gelada Baboon, and the Ethiopian Wolf. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978.
