After breakfast, we will head south-west towards Butajira. It will lead us to one of the biggest Neolithic sites in Ethiopia - Melka Kunture(an open air Museum). It is located near the gorge, just over the Awash river in the vicinity of the city of Melka Awash. The open air museum is a prehistoric site where many stone tools and fossils,dating back 1.8million years have been found, exhibits are displayed in tukuls(huts)including tools used by Homo erectus who once lived in the area.
Then, we will keep driving to the same route towards Butarija, to take a turn to the gravel road, near which the Rock Temple Adadi Mariam is located. It was established at the same time as rock temples in Lalibela - in the 12th century. It was carved by order of king Lalibela to have a place to pray on the road to Mount Ziquala.
The final activity of our trip will be a visit to Tiya. Tyia is one of the UNESCO World heritage Sites of Ethiopia. There are rock graves up to 5m high, engraved with secret symbols including swords ,and the stele marks graves of individuals aged 18-30 who died about 800 years ago. There were the leaders of their tribes, and what is interesting, they were buried in fetal positions. Drive Back to Addis Ababa.
